The Sahel region is a vast territory of 5.6 million km² with a population of 120 million inhabitants, spread over the 5 countries making up the G5-Sahel, headquartered in Nouakchott: Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Mauritania and Niger. Côte d’Ivoire and Senegal were added to this list for their geographic, cultural and economic proximity.
The Sahel is potentially one of the richest regions in the world with abundant human, cultural and natural resources. More than half of its population is under 25.

Despite the volatile security situation in the north of the region, its growth potential has not been questioned. An average growth of 6% was expected for 2020, above the 3.8% for the continental average.

Senegal, Burkina Faso and Côte d’Ivoire which are the drivers of the Sahel, should maintain their dynamism. Mauritania in particular, thanks to its recent mining discoveries could be propelled to the top of the ranking.
